About the Lab

EngeoLab is a leading academic institution of the Department of Geology of the University of Patras, combining cutting-edge research with high-level education.

EnGeo was founded in 1988 as an organic unit of the Department of Geology of the University of Patras and became autonomous in 2000 with Presidential Decree 284/2000. It has made a significant contribution to the educational and research activities of the Department over many years and has modern laboratory and scientific equipment used in various research subjects. It is active in research issues related to the study and operation of technical projects as well as their impacts on the environment, with geohazards and their management being a key research axis of the laboratory. The Laboratory's research team includes faculty members, PhDs, postgraduate students and external scientific collaborators. The laboratory also operates as a Service Provision Unit (S.P.U.) of the Special Research Funds Account (ELKE) University of Patras, providing its services in the subjects of Technical Geology, Geology of Technical Works and Rock Mechanics.

Research Fields and Services

  • Laboratory tests in Soil Mechanics and Rock Mechanics.
  • Laboratory tests of suitability of aggregates
  • Special laboratory tests as: a) shearing of rock discontinuities and b) shearing of soils and geosynthetic materials in the large shear box
  • Measurements with recording instruments in apclinometric and piezometric boreholes.
  • Measurements of rock discontinuities and their digitization using UAV and special software.
  • Preparation of special geotechnical surveys for: a) stability of slopes and caves, b) monitoring and restoration of landslides, c) suggesting protection measures against rockfalls, d) geological suitability, e) monitoring of erosion in the terrestrial and coastal zone.
